The architecture and atmosphere transport visitors back to a time when the clip-clp of horse hooves on the streets, trolley bells, and friendly laughter from shady porches were familiar sounds.
The DickensFest site was home to Joplin’s wealthiest and most influential citizens during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Easter capitalists and miners made their fortunes from Joplin mineral ore and build impressive homes and monuments to their success in this residential neighborhood. In the last ten years, residents have invested countless hours and millions of dollars into the impressive Colonial-Revival, Queen Anne, Romanesque, Arts and Crafts, Dutch Colonial, Gothic, Prairie, Tudor and Victorian structures.
While strolling down the Olde English Village boardwalk, you will discover the homes reveal architectural elements which give each place its own character. many of the sites claim original wrought-iron, grand staircases, ornamental plasterwork, stained glass, Italian marble, mosaics, murals, fireplace mantels and decorative woodwork.
